Broiler Breeder Housing Systems: Slat-and-Litter Floors vs Automatic Nest Boxes & Separate Sex Feeding

Shuohui Poultry Equipment · Editorial guide · Updated

Broiler breeders represent the genetic foundation and highest-value live bird asset in the poultry production chain. Managing parent stock (PS) requires an entirely different engineering and equipment approach than commercial broilers or commercial table egg layers. Equipment must balance natural mating behavior, strict body weight uniformity, separate male/female nutritional restriction, floor egg minimization, and gentle hatching egg handling.

Modern broiler breeder facilities utilize either 2/3 slatted floor with 1/3 central scratch area or full plastic slatted layouts equipped with automatic center-belt communal nest boxes and separate sex feeding (SSF) systems. This engineering guide examines layout architectures, equipment sizing formulas, and management automation.

House Layout Architecture: 2/3 Slats with Center Scratch Area

The industry-standard breeder shed layout dedicates two-thirds of the house width to elevated plastic slats along both sidewalls, with the center one-third dedicated to a sunken concrete scratch and mating floor covered with clean pine shavings:

• Stocking Density & Sex Ratio: Standard stocking density is 4.5 to 5.5 birds per square meter of total floor area. Roosters (males) are introduced at a mating sex ratio of 9.0% to 10.0% (9 to 10 roosters per 100 hens) at 21 to 22 weeks of age.

• Heavy-Duty Polypropylene Slats: Breeder birds are heavy (females 3.5–4.2 kg, males 4.5–5.5 kg). Slats are manufactured from virgin polypropylene with UV inhibitors, engineered with non-slip rounded 20mm × 20mm apertures and reinforced fiberglass or galvanized steel support beams. Smooth rounded edges prevent bumblefoot, footpad dermatitis, and foot lesions during mating.

• Slat Height & Ramp Incline: Elevated 450mm to 600mm above the scratch pit, providing ample storage capacity for manure throughout the 40-week laying cycle. Anti-slip plastic ramps with a gentle 20° slope ensure easy bird transit between the scratch area and slat platforms.

Separate Sex Feeding (SSF) Mechanical Engineering

Because broiler roosters have much larger frames and lower calcium requirements than laying hens, male and female feeds must be strictly segregated to avoid obese males (which causes mating failure) and calcium toxicosis:

1. Female Feeding Circuit (Grill-Restricted Chain or Pan Lines): Female feeding troughs are equipped with precision steel grills with vertical gap openings calibrated to 43mm to 45mm width and 60mm height. Hens with smaller heads pass their beaks through easily, while rooster heads (head width >48mm) are physically blocked from accessing female feed.

2. Male Feeding Lines (Elevated Suspended Pans): Roosters are fed from dedicated ceiling-suspended male pan feeder lines. These lines are elevated to 500mm to 550mm above the litter floor. Roosters easily stretch to reach the high pans, whereas shorter hens cannot reach the male ration.

3. Rapid Feed Distribution Speed: Breeder feeding is strictly restricted to daily timed rations consumed within 30 to 45 minutes. Feed delivery systems must distribute feed throughout the entire 120m shed in under 4 to 5 minutes (using high-speed 36 m/min chain conveyors or automated hoppers traveling at ~6 m/min) to prevent feed crowding and flock weight dispersion.

Automatic Communal Nest Boxes & Floor Egg Prevention

Eggs laid on the floor or slats (floor eggs) suffer high bacterial contamination and cannot be used as prime hatching eggs. Automatic communal nest boxes maximize hatchable egg percentages:

• Center-Belt Communal Nests: Single-tier or double-tier nest boxes mounted down the centerline of the slat platforms provide 1 square meter of nesting area per 100 to 120 hens. Nest floors feature perforated AstroTurf or soft rubberized nesting pads that slope at 7.0° toward a central enclosed egg conveyor belt.

• Automatic Expeller / Ejector System: An automated motorized push-out rack gently closes the nest cavities 1 hour before lights off. This prevents hens from roosting inside nests overnight, keeping nest pads 100% clean and eliminating broodiness.

• Perforated Polypropylene Egg Belt: 250mm to 500mm wide antistatic perforated PP belts transport hatching eggs smoothly to the front collection room at 2.5 to 4.0 m/min, preventing hairline cracks on delicate breeder egg shells.

Breeder Nipple Drinking & Water Quality Management

Drinking lines are mounted strictly over the slatted floor areas to prevent water spills from wetting the mating scratch floor:

• High-Flow 360° Stainless Steel Nipples: Delivering 80 to 100 ml/min under 250mm to 350mm water column pressure, equipped with anti-swing brackets and individual drip catch cups.

• Winch Line Synchronization: Motorized winch systems allow height adjustments every week, matching hen eye-level height to promote upright drinking posture.
