Poultry Feed Silo and Flex Auger Systems: Sizing (10 to 30 Tons), Unloader Drives & Automatic Delivery

Shuohui Poultry Equipment · Editorial guide · Updated

On-farm bulk feed storage silos and automated flex auger transport systems form the vital arterial supply link in commercial layer, pullet, and broiler production. In large poultry facilities consuming between 3 and 15 metric tons of feed daily, bagged feed handling is completely unfeasible due to high labor overhead, bag disposal waste, and constant rodent and pest contamination.

Modern galvanized corrugated steel feed silos combined with centerless helical flex auger delivery lines guarantee airtight storage, prevent feed bridging and fungal spoilage, and automatically deliver bulk feed directly to internal cage traveling hoppers (~6 m/min) or floor pan feeding lines.

Silo Capacity Sizing: The 5-to-7 Day Safety Buffer Rule

Feed silos must be sized to hold a minimum of 5 to 7 days of maximum flock consumption to safeguard against logistics disruptions, feed mill maintenance downtime, or inclement weather delivery delays:

• Layer Farm Example (50,000 hens): Peak consumption is approximately 115g to 120g per hen per day, totaling 5.8 to 6.0 metric tons daily. A 7-day reserve requires 40 to 42 metric tons of storage. The optimal engineering recommendation is dual 22-ton silos or dual 25-ton silos. Dual silos allow complete cleaning and biosecurity turnover between feed deliveries.

• Broiler Farm Example (30,000 broilers): Week 5–6 consumption reaches 4.5 to 5.2 metric tons daily, requiring a 25 to 30-ton silo capacity per house.

Corrugated Galvanized Silo Structural Specifications

Poultry feed silos are subjected to heavy vertical gravity loads, internal dynamic friction, and outdoor ultraviolet/corrosive weather exposure:

• Heavy-Duty Zinc Galvanization: Silo side sheets and roof cones are roll-formed from high-tensile structural steel with a hot-dip galvanization coating of 275 g/m² (Z275) to 350 g/m² (Z350), offering 15 to 20 years of rust-free outdoor service life.

• Cone Angles & Flow Discharge: Upper roof cone is engineered with a 40° slope for rapid rain runoff, while the lower discharge hopper features a steep 60° cone angle. Steep cone geometry ensures gravity mass flow, preventing feed hang-up and bridging of mash feeds containing molasses or high fat content.

• Anti-Bridging Solutions: Silo boots can be equipped with pneumatic hammer knockers or electric vibration shakers triggered automatically if auger sensors detect feed starvation.

Flex Auger Coils, PVC Tubes & Delivery Capacities

Centerless flexible spiral augers transport feed from the outdoor silo boot into the chicken house through curved PVC delivery pipes without crushing delicate feed pellets:

• Auger Material: Manufactured from high-tensile, heat-treated spring steel wire with exceptional fatigue resistance and flex endurance around 45° and 90° pipe bends.

• Standard Diameter Sizing: Model 75 (75mm OD PVC pipe, 1,400 kg/h delivery capacity, driven by 0.75 kW motor); Model 90 (90mm OD PVC pipe, 2,500 kg/h delivery capacity, driven by 1.1 kW motor); Model 125 (125mm OD PVC pipe, up to 5,500 kg/h delivery capacity, driven by 1.5–2.2 kW motor for rapid central hopper filling).

Drive Motors, Smart Cut-Off Sensors & Weighing Cells

• Unloader Gearmotors: High-torque enclosed helical gearmotors rated IP55 ensure reliable outdoor start-up under full feed column load.

• Smart Capacitive Level Sensors: Mounted at the intermediate feed drop discharge boots inside the house. When internal hoppers reach capacity, sensors cut off the auger drive instantly.

• Silo Compression Load Cells: Electronic load cells installed under each silo leg provide continuous digital readout of real-time feed weight, feed consumption curves, and automatic low-inventory reorder alerts directly to farm management software.
